1loveart Rump Show At Hamilton House

So the 1loveart show opened tonight down at Hamilton House on Stokes Croft. It was billed as being ‘urban art’, so to be honest less was expected than at other shows. But you know what, it’s actually really good.

There is some of the usual antics in there, the same old ideas being rehashed in an entirely similar way, or biting as it might be known in a happily different context. But beyond a small bit of that, there’s a really interesting mix right across the range, from fine arty stuff, right across to tagging and piecing.

It’s one of those things that make you realise just how many people there are doing all sorts in this city. There’s not many of the more usual names in there, but it’s still full of people. Nice to see Jeffrow and Andy Stott with some new work, and Dot Com’s wall is easily one of the stand out parts of the whole thing. The British take on the rail map is funny as too.

It’s all laid out nicely, it’s a nice space they’ve got up there, if the lighting’s a little harsh in places. Hard to say though, it’s just got a feel of a good and well put together show, the sort of thing you’d go back to for another look.

So, it’s the first of the busy Bristol Christmas season for shows, but it’s set a really strong benchmark for them. Do head on down, it’s there for a shortish time before moving down to The Lanes down by Bridewell.

Here’s a bit of a gallery of what’s there. Minus the disturbing statues in the middle of the room, which really are outside of the realm of this blog. You’ll have to see those for yourself.

More Christmas Shows…

Remember when it was just 12 days of xmas putting on a show for christmas? Things have come a long way in the last couple of years, here’s a couple more shows coming up, in addition to the Inkie and Weapon of Choice shows blogged last week.

First up, the ever reliable Art-El crew along with some fine art bods, doing something a bit further away from the grafstreeturban side of things than usual, but a big line up and an interesting new venue should make this one worth wandering along to this Friday night.

Picton Mews is off Picton Street down towards the Thali/Bells Diner part of it, where this used to be if memory serves.

Here’s the chat…

Selected from each gallery is a mix of local, international and national artists from as far afield as the USA, Portugal and Swansea!
High Renaissance, Fran, ill joseph, Joshua Barber, Leanne Ellis, Motorboy, Pedro Matos, Ria Hill, Simon Riley and Tom Hine.
The period of expectant waiting and preparation will cease and commence simultaneously at 7 p.m. on Friday 4th December at the newly discovered and delightful ‘2° Degrees Gallery’, a new creative space situated in Montpelier, in the heart of Bristol’s creative quarter.

2 Degrees Gallery, 2 Picton Mews (right off of Picton Street), Montpelier BS6 5PB

The day before, this Thursday, there’s a shorter show opening down at Hamilton House on Stokes Croft, from 1LoveArt. On from Thursday 3rd to Monday 7th December, the whole thing then moves down to The Lanes down by Bridewell from the 12th December to the 12th Jaunary. Definitely ‘Urban’ art this one, if that’s your kind of thing, although there are a few writers in there amongst the stencils.

Stokes Croft China And Paint Experiment

When the flyer and the email for this came around, it looked like the sort of thing that might be a bit far out of the scope of the blog, despite it being put on by the PRSC folks.

As it turned out though, the Stokes Croft China show, which opened at the PRSC shop on Jamaica Street on Friday night, is actually pretty interesting.

Chris Chalkley of PRSC’s background is in the china and pottery trade, so it’s a natural progression for Stokes Croft China to be launched, a range of china and crockery items, all printed with different things related to the graf and arty goings on around Stokes Croft.

Here’s some of what’s there.

A huge load of ‘I love’ mugs…

With some familiar names.

Lots of other mugs too with images of work from around Stokes Croft over the last few years. Here’s some Dan ones…

…and this one, one of this blog’s personal Stokes Croft favourites from the last few years.

It’s not just mugs, why not treat yourself to a new, erm, toilet?

Or perhaps a Boswell plate?

The whole show’s properly presented, in display cabinets bought from Royal Worcester when it had a closing sale from a factory no less.

Here’s the logos…

…had thought thought put into them, a crown with ‘SCC’ for Stokes Croft China above.

It’s an interesting take on the work going on round Stokes Croft, and on until Christmas Eve, so have a wander down and judge for yourself if they’re fit to use the crown.

Incidentally, next weekend, there’s another ‘paint experiement’ going on. Must be 18 months or so ago now that Jamaica Street has a load of boards on it in front of the hostel with small pieces painted by lots of different folk. There’s going to be another one on the 5th and 6th December, here’s the idea.

Boards, canvas and other surfaces of various sizes will be provided and attached to the P.R.S.C’s Jamaica Street fence in Stokes Croft. Some painting materials will also be available – though contributions will be welcome – and anyone will be free to make an artwork on the 5th and 6th of December, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

After that, the works will remain on the Jamaica Street wall until sold, and as gaps appear, new boards will go up for painting.

So, if you’re looking for somewhere for a quick paint, wander down…

Dan And ‘Banksy’ On Stokes Croft

Couple of stencil bits up at the end of City Road where it meets Stokes Croft at the moment, round the advertising board that apparently is scheduled to be removed pretty soon, which should free up a massive space for bigger work.

One of them’s a Michael Jackson stencil, that according the the Evening Post bears the hallmarks of a Banksy piece. Assuming one of Banksy’s hallmarks is using an A4 printer. And another one is underspray. And not signing his work.

Still though, topical and quick, and perhaps there’s something to a black era MJ being sprayed in white.

This Dan piece is pretty well done though, sure it’s appeared somewhere else already, can’t immediately place it though.

From Blog To Post

Remember this and this? Well, if you want to see some more shots of the car and a bit of the story behind it, the Evening Post has covered it today.

So far no ‘all graffiti is bad no matter what’ comments either, result!

UPDATE: Congratulations to ‘Sam, Bristol’, who wins a lifetime’s supply of Banksy originals for his commenting skills on the EP site.

The Blog Paints A Merc – The Finale

Well, not the blog painting a car obviously, that would be absurd, for so many reasons. But a guy got in touch a good while back looking for people to paint his car inna Bristol style, and first to step up to it were 3rd Eye and Dan.

Still left the front to do though, so Sepr got on that one, with 3rd Eye coming back to finish off his work as a joint effort.

Turned out really nice, a proper one off.

Left side…

…right side…

…and more towards the front…

…finally Sepr all over the bonnet.

RWA Show – The Finished Thing

The show’s preview night is tonight then, and it opens properly tomorrow (Saturday) so the photos can go up. Got to say, unless you absolutely can’t make it down to this, don’t rely on the photos for it, they’re never going to capture the whole thing properly.

Anyway, photos of the finished works in there, again in no particular order, courtesy of WordPress.
