Barton Hill Youth Club Still Going

As mentioned a couple of times before, the legendary Barton Hill Youth Club is still there, and has recently had people going back to paint again. Not the free space it used to be, painting’s only been on a few of organised weekends, but it’s slowly coming together.

That said, the place is under threat of demolition in the next couple of years at the moment, a decision that people will no doubt come to regret in a few years time if it does happen. So, more painting coming up in the new year probably, but here’s a bit of what’s there now…

Here’s the courts in a wide shot at the moment…

…bit of Cheo…

…Jody (not quite finished)…

…and Shade SOP.

When people first got back there, an old Banksy was found under layers of peeling paint, and here’s another bit that’s still just about there after the trials of time, ‘Art’ by Chaos and Shab, from 20 years or so ago…

…and a bit closer.

This place really shouldn’t be pulled down, there’s so much more could still be done with it, and if this city cares about its history, then there’s some modern archaeology right here.

Will get some more photos soon, thanks to Jody for these pics.

Get Dring Mobile – The Photos

Top night down at Paintworks last night for the Get Dring Mobile auction, some great live painting outside, great music and a whole lot of bidding for a great guy. Well, bidding for art to raise money for a great guy, Mike himself of course not being for sale.

It was interesting to see how the bidding went. Some pieces were an absolute steal, other went for far more than you would ever have thought. As a wise man put it last night, ‘a picture’s only worth what someone is willing to pay for it’. Stencil work still seems to be very much in fashion with the buyerati, wonder how much longer that will last.

In total, the auction raised something like £24,500, before you count in the bar receipts, pieces that sold outside of the auction and all sorts. So well on the way to getting Mike’s car sorted then, awesome stuff.

There’s more to come still too, lots of pieces left to be sold on Ebay very soon, including a lovely Will Barras that lots of people were coveting last night, so keep an eye out.

Here’s some photos from it all then, the live painting as it went along, and the works inside the auction as well.

The Weekend’s Harbourside Painting

When Children of the Can came out, the massive length of boards in front of the industrial museum development were finally painted, having sat there unpainted for too long. That was a while back now though, so last weekend they got a fresh coat of paint from more of Bristol’s great and good. All done in conjunction with the museum, who are going to have a bit of a display about it when it finally opens to boot.

Some really nice work done, of all sorts of styles, and the usual ‘queuing to take photos’ thing going on earlier today. Here’s some results…

Thanks to Jer Forceone for the detail on some of the names!

Finally, the blog’s had a Twatter account for ages, but it’s been left unused as there’s not a lot to do with one it seems. Still, worth a punt, so if you fancy ‘following’ the blog on Twitter, then we’re here.

The Lakota Gets Painted

Lakota was a really big club back in the day, so many huge events there, and billed on a national level with Cream, Turnmills, etc. Despite one or two biggies now and again (the Banksy Museum Show afterparty was there a few months back, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and all), it’s not been what it was for a few years now, and it came close to being pulled down for yet more of the ‘luxury executive flats’ that this city so clearly needs.

Seems that’s still a possibility, but it’s on the backburner now, as there’s a new lease in place for a couple more years. So, given what it used to be, the owners have decided to do the place up, put in brand new toilets, rip out the stage, and get a tidy new paint job to go over the flaking Paris and Eco work that was there (and had lasted 10 years or so to be fair).

So, the weekend saw a massive new work going up on it, Cheo getting his bit done on Friday, then Flx, Soker, Jody, Sepr, Epok and 3Dom coming down Saturday onwards.

It’s still not done now, there’s talk of more people being lined up to come along, and there may be some tidying to do here and there. But here’s a bit of a gallery of the weekend’s painting (and the one bit of graf they’ve left inside the now repainted club, a couple of old Ghostboy stencils).

Jody Show At Weapon Of Choice

Top night on Friday, great crowd, great work and a great time. For those as couldn’t make it, here are some shots of the work that’s up at the Weapon of Choice Gallery. A lot of it sold on the night, but worth an ask if there’s anything there you fancy. So to speak.

Ta to Jerforceone for some of the photos!

Get Dring Mobile – The Auction

get dring mobile paris logo1

You may have heard of this by now, but if not you should do. There’s a charity fundraising drive going on at the moment called ‘Get Dring Mobile’, which is aiming to raise enough money to sort the legendary Mike Dring of Art-el fame out with a a modified vehicle he can drive himself. For those as don’t know, here’s the backstory from the fundraising website;

Michael Dring was 23 years old when he broke his neck in a road traffic accident, resulting in paralysis from the upper chest down – medically he is classified as having a complete Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) resulting in Tetraplegia (level C6).   Between April 2009 and April 2010, friends and family of Michael are attempting to raise money to put towards the purchase of an adapted car which will enable him to drive independently.

Being the kind of bloke he is, this isn’t just about Mike either;

Any additional funds raised over and above the amount needed will be either donated to Salisbury Spinal Unit or go towards a lasting legacy of this project.  Michael has been so inspired by this initiative that currently he is exploring the possibility of setting up an official charity in order to help other people regain any loss of independence due to SCI.  If Michael succeeds in setting up this charity any additional funds will go towards this charity which will assist others to afford hand controls or vehicle adaptations.

So, lots of stuff going on as a fundraiser, but one element of it, natch, is raising funds through grafurbanstreet art. A call was put out for people to donate pieces to a fundraising auction which has had a huge response, so they’re now going to be holding the thing down at Paintworks, viewing of the pieces on the 14th and 15th of October 2009, with the auction starting at 7pm on the 15th. Get down there early on the 15th though, as there’s going to be music and live painting from 4pm, with Inkie and Mr Jago just some of the names confirmed so far.

If you’ve got a piece you’d like to donate to the auction then there’s still plenty of time. The line up’s pretty special already.

Upfest ’09 – A Day Of Pictures

So, Upfest today then, that odd egalitarian mix of people painting, from people fairly new to basic stenciling to some of the biggest names, certainly in Bristol, over the last 20 years or more.

Was a fun day, tons going on, and there will be photos from it all over the web anyway. In some places the only people not painting were those taking photos of people painting. So, this blog just concentrated on Bristol related people, and in some of the less popular spots a bit too. One of the good things about this year was the number of different places to paint, from the Tobacco Factory itself, to a disused garage nearby, to a pub and some boards put up alongside the new cut, complete with occasional steam train.

Here’s some of what went on (if you click on the picture twice you get biggerness)

Some work’s not finished yet (there was still a load of unpainted board by the river towards the end of the day for one), and some pieces are well worth going back to get finished photos for. Possibly more soon then…
